What does the research show for BCAA supplementation?
The research points to two main benefits of branch chain amino acid supplementation.
1. BCAA's may increase lean body mass. One study found that in trained men given 14g BCAAs daily for eight weeks alongside a routine weightlifting plan, the consumption of BCAAs promoted fat loss (2.2% body fat) and promoted lean mass accrual (4.2kg) to a greater extent than 28g of whey protein (2.1kg lean mass and 1.2% body fat) and 28g carbohydrate (1.4kg lean mass and 0.6% body fat). 2. BCAA's may reduce fatigue during exercise. A study was conducted on the fatigue levels of elite male racers. The finding concluded that those supplemented with a high amount of BCAAs reported a reduction in physical and mental fatigue. [2]

As far as BCAA's are concerned, there are several occasions throughout the day where they can be beneficial. Some of the most beneficial times are before, during or right after your workout.
What are the main benefits of BCAA's?
There are two main benefits of BCAA's.
Increase protein synthesis (i.e. muscle tissue repair). BCAA's have been shown in clinical research to promote protein synthesis, rebuilding and repairing damaged proteins (i.e. muscle cells) in the body.
Prevents muscle breakdown. BCAA's can also help to avoid exercise-induced muscle breakdown. This helps reduce muscle soreness, enhance recovery time and improve muscle growth and thus strength over time.
