This do-it-yourself applesauce is bursting with flavour from fresh apples, lemon and allspice. The key is adding a few strips of lemon peel to the apples while cooking, citrus heightens the apple flavour. This recipe uses Splenda to cut down the calories from carbs.
1. Put all ingredients into a large heavy pot. Cover, bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Reduce heat and simmer for 20-30 minutes.
2. Remove from heat. Mash with potato masher if you want it chunky or run through a food processor if you want it smooth.
3. Serve warm or refrigerated.
Note: This recipe freezes easily, and lasts up to one year in a cold freezer.
