INTRODUCTION
Previously I reviewed AST Sports Science's VP2 awarding it 4 out of 5. Now it's time to look at the competition - Dymatize ISO-100. ISO-100 is a hydrolysed whey protein isolate (WPI) and today we're going to look at the "Berry" flavour.
MIXABILITY
Absolutely no problems here. This protein seems to mix perfectly - no clumping whatsoever. Throw it in a shaker bottle, add some water and away you go!
TASTE
The "taste factor" is where a lot of the hydrolyzed whey isolates come crashing down due to the bitter nature of them. Whilst I cannot say that the taste is outstanding, ISO-100 Berry is probably one of the better products relative to the other berry/strawberry flavours on the market today.
EFFECTIVENESS
Hydrolyzed WPI is my personal choice for post-workout supplementation due to the fast-acting nature of this type of protein. I have been using this particular protein for over a year and have found my results and recovery to be excellent as a result of this. Compared to VP2, there seems to be no foreseeable difference with regards to strength gains, hypertrophy, recovery or fitness levels. I'm giving the effectiveness full marks, simply because this protein efficiently assists in producing results.
NUTRITIONAL
This protein is very heavily marketed on the fact that there is 0g fat, 0g carbohydrate and 25g of protein per serve. A nutritional breakdown like this is very impressive - after all this protein powder is packed full of protein...and not much else. It seems that they have managed to twist the figures slightly though; per 100g there are 2g of carbohydrate and 1g of fat. But honestly at the end of the day the fat and carbohydrate composition is negligible.
Whilst this product does contain aspartame, due to the lack of evidence to suggest that aspartame is "bad", this component will not affect the 5/5 I am giving the nutritional characteristic.
VALUE FOR MONEY
Excellent value. There are two sizes available: 908g or 2.3kg. The beauty about the larger tub is that you can buy in bulk and save. The 2.3kg tub retails at $130, however you can generally grab it for around $100. This works out at about $1.20 a scoop for a hydrolyzed WPI (compared to about $1.88 a scoop for VP2) - that is very cheap for a good quality product!
CONCLUSION
ISO-100 is an excellent all-rounder. What's not to like? Whilst the taste is, in my opinion, the least desirable aspect to this product...it's still pretty good! Sorry VP2, but ISO-100 takes the cake - an improved taste alongside better value for money. Full marks!
