New Years Resolutions & Why to NOT Wait

New Years Resolutions - Why Wait?

There are just over six weeks until the new year and the festive season is nearly upon us. This means work functions, social outings and family get-togethers, which is sure to add a few kilograms to your physique!

If you haven't been consciously moving toward your health and fitness goals, it's time to get started now and NOT in the new year. Delaying your training is easily accomplished by rationalising toyourself that it's pointless trying to lose weight over the next six weeks due to the festive season. Thus, you should therefore start fresh in the new year.

Does this mindset sound familair at all? It is a very common approach to accomplishing those ever-lasting weight loss, toning and muscle development goals. If you do have this mindset, it is important to identify that this habit of rationalisation is standing in the way of you accomplishing your goals. Whilst you may obtain a feeling of relief that you have made the decision to begin training in the new year, the reality is that you have not begun training, so you are not progressing toward your goals. This is procrastination. This may sound frank, but it is important to identify that by putting your training and healthy eating on hold, you are not doing yourself any favours.

The "new year procrastination syndrome" is probably the most common example of the issue at hand. Note that this is only an example. Another example could be waiting until the weather warms up in Winter. However the actual issue that we are dealing with here is your overall mindset to accomplishing your goals. By viewing weight loss or toning as a "temporary" lifestyle adjustment (with a start and end date), you are setting yourself up for failure. Accomplishing your goals requires the permanent realignment of your entire lifestyle; incorporating both effective exercise and healthy eating.

Making permanent changes in your life may sound daunting at first, but it is actually much easier than a temporary fix, like a short-term diet. A typical fad diet is unpleasant and unsustainable. Meanwhile, a permanent shift in lifestyle habits requires you to develop an approach that is both enjoyable and effective. This is exactly what we teach with our personal training services.

The most difficult part is getting started and developing new habits. Don't wait until the new year - now is the time to get started! Nothing will change if you change nothing. Plus, how much better will you feel in six weeks time knowing that you already have six weeks under your belt?
