ARTICLE - RED WINE FOR A HEALTHY HEART

Written by Poch De La Rosa on Tuesday 24 January, 2012.

SUMMARY

THE ARTICLE

Normally, red wine is associated with the French. Not too many people know they are health-conscious people who make it a point to exercise regularly and pay attention to what they eat. That being said, red wine should be associated with good health for the many health benefits it brings.

Here are some of those benefits:

1. Reduction of harmful effects of smoking—red wine, with or without alcohol, reduces the harmful effect of smoking on the endothelium. This is the layer of cells that provides a friction-reducing lining in lymph vessels, blood vessels and the heart.

2. Heart disease prevention—drinking red win in moderation (22-32 g of alcohol) helps in preventing coronary heart disease. This is because it reduces the production of low-density lipoprotein (LDL or bad) cholesterol and boosting high-density lipoprotein (HDL or good) cholesterol.

3. Blood clot prevention—red wine produces an anti-clotting effect. High protein fibrinogen levels which promote blood clot formation are lowered.

4. Lower blood pressure—excessive alcohol consumption is generally considered a risk factor for hypertension. However, some studies indicate that two glasses of red wine (250 ml) taken together with a meal, lower post-meal blood pressure in hypertensive people.

5. Immune system maintenance—according to a study of the University of Florida, red wine is said to be good for the maintenance of the immune system.

6. Excellent source of polyphenols, flavonoids and resveratrol—what this simply means is that red wine is loaded with antioxidants which reduce the risk of cancer. Resveratrol is a potent antioxidant whose quantity is more abundant in red wine than it is in white wine. This antioxidant is said to be a defence mechanism against Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, therefore boosting your brain health. Not only that, resveratrol is also said to increase human lifespan, which increases its health potency.

7. Better sleep quality—red wine, especially Cabernet Sauvignon, Chianti and Merlot contain melatonin which regulate the human body clock. Try drinking a glass of red wine before retiring to reap this benefit.

8. Suppression of colds—researchers in Spain discovered that people who drank two glasses of red wine daily reduced their susceptibility to colds by as much as 44 percent.

As you can see, drinking red wine not only results in a healthy heart, it also boosts your overall health in more ways than one. As the old adage suggests, everything should be done in moderation. So it is with red wine. While it has a tonne of benefits, drinking too much of it leads to a drunken state or gastritis for people with sensitive digestive systems. Still, the pros outweigh the cons. Next time you feel like going out with your loved one to paint the town red, why not take it literally by drinking some red wine under the romantic moonlit sky?
