Eye health is something not to be taken for granted. With many people working in front of their computers or reading in dark light for hours, their eye health may be taking a turn for the worse without them knowing about it.
Fortunately, modern supplements are here to save the day. Two common ingredients are lutein and zeaxanthin:
1. Lutein-lutein is a carotenoid that occurs naturally in vegetables and fruit. It is what gives a lot of plants and food a vibrant colour.
Lutein is also present in the macula of the retina, which is the part responsible for central vision. Damage to the macula is one of the causes of vision problems, including blindness. Lutein protects the eyes from damage such as those caused by the rays of the sun and oxidation.
It has been scientifically proven that including Lutein in ones diet through supplementation of food intake fights eye diseases such as Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD), glaucoma and cataracts.
2. Zeaxanthin-this is another carotenoid; a plant-derived yellow pigment with high antioxidant activity. Good food sources of zeaxanthin include leafy green vegetables such as kale, Swiss chard, spinach and watercress.
Zeaxanthin migrates to the eyes and is drawn into the lens, macula and fovea (at the retinas centre). It helps build the yellow macular pigment shield that protects eye cells from dangerous light frequencies.
It also provides powerful antioxidant activity which neutralises free radicals that destroy eye cells.
Comprehensive research has indicated that people who consumed far higher amounts of supplements lessened their problems related to vision, rarely showed signs of macular degeneration and lowered their risk of developing cataracts.
