When considering a post workout protein supplement there are two primary options – Whey Protein Isolate (WPI) or A Whey Protein Isolate/Concentrate Blend (WPI/WPC). WPIs is the most pure and concentrated form of whey, have a higher protein per serve ratio and typically contain 90% (or more) protein with minimal lactose and fat. WPI/WPC blends also contain a low level of fat, but in general have higher levels of bioactive compounds and carbohydrates in the form of lactose and have anywhere between 70-85% protein depending on the product. The difference? Due to its extensive filtering process and purity WPI offer a quicker absorption time allowing the appropriate nutrients to be delivered quicker to muscle cells and tissues following an intense workout.

Dymatize ISO-100 is a high quality protein supplement that derives its name from its protein source, 100% Protein Isolate. The protein is both 100% hydrolysed and has undergone quality control processes resulting both a lactose and fat free isolate in an effort to make it more digestible, absorbable and one of the most biological available sources of protein on the market.

Taste

Dymatize IS0-100 is available in four flavours – Vanilla, Pina Colada, Chocolate and Berry. All the four flavours taste amazing mixed in either milk or water. Consuming mainly post workout I prefer to mix my shakes in water alone, to maximise the full potential of the quicker absorption time of an isolate and hands down this would have to be the best tasting Isolate on the market. Out of the flavours my overall preference would have to go to the Berry flavour, followed closely by Chocolate, although I wasn’t disappointed in any of the options.

Ease of Mixing

Upon taking a scoop of protein there is a real smoothness to the ISO-100 powder, this translated to an excellent mixability of the product. The powder dissolves effortlessly within water and a simple shaker bottle with no clumping or graininess. Likewise the powder presented no foaminess and could be consumed instantly upon mixing. Additionally very little to no residue stuck to the walls of the shaker which are all signs of a high quality product.

Effectiveness

As with the effectiveness of any protein product its merit needs be measured over the long term with respect to ones specific goals. Either way Dymatize ISO-100 should be able to assist in weight loss, muscle development and recovery by facilitating fat loss and minimising muscle breakdown after a workout. Following my training I found an increase in my rates of recovery and stronger when approaching subsequent sessions when consuming immediately post workout. Also by combining ISO-100 with a fast-acting carbohydrate source, insulin release is also encouraged which can further enhances protein uptake into cells. Examples of this include Dextrose or Waxy Maize both available within the supplement store.

Nutritional Analysis

Composed entirely of Hydrolysed WPI Dymatize’s ISO-100 contains 24 grams of protein per 28 gram serve, with zero carb and zero fat this equates to 86% pure protein by weight.  In addition to its high protein content the formula also contains a great amino acid profile and Lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC), which is designed to help the natural protein synthesis and uptake in the digestive system.

Value for Money

Due to the additional manufacturing processes involved, WPI typically cost more than the WPI/WPC blends. Dymatize’s ISO-100 is available in two sizes 2.27kg and 908g. The 2.27kg size is priced at $117 and contains 81 serves equating to $1.44 per serve. The 908g size cost $56.7 with 32 serves which works out at $1.77 a serve. Dymatize has a reputation of offering high quality products for customers at lower prices and their ISO-100 is no different, costing slightly less than most competitors WPI product lines.

Conclusion

Those looking for a great tasting, high quality protein supplement at a great price need to look no further, Dymatize ISO-100 delivers on all these fronts. Its effortless mixability, fantastic taste despite no sugar and high protein percentage makes it one of the best WPI products on the market.  With zero lactose and zero carbohydrates the product is also ideal for people with lactose sensitivity or on low carb diets. I’ve had my fair share of proteins and hands down ISO-100 would have to be one of my favourite products, highly recommended.
