Question
Do you believe that the Tony Ferguson diet is healthy and maintainable?
Answer
The Tony Ferguson Diet (or officially known as the Tony Ferguson Weightloss Program) is in my opinion, your typical "Fad Diet". Apart from restricting your foods to a list of "allowed foods", you have to replace meals throughout the day with artificial liquid substitutes.
I do not believe that this is a healthy approach to weight loss at all. By replacing proper food meals with liquid meal replacements, I believe that you are essentially starving yourself of vital nutrients (eg. vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients etc) that are not contained within the meal replacements themselves. The human body was built to consume food - not liquid substitutes. Supplementing with liquid meals is a completely different story - but this is a replacement diet by my definition.
Additionally, it is a low carbohydrate diet. The aim of this low carb diet is to stimulate ketosis in order to lose body fat. By depleting your glycogen stores through ketosis, this will undoubtedly inhibit your energy levels throughout the day. As a result, performance and recovery will be greatly affected if you exercise. Exercise does not seem to be actively encouraged through this program, which is a big no-no for a healthy all-round lifestyle.
The maintainability of this program is not realistic at all in my opinion. Unless you plan on spending the rest of your life on meal replacement drinks, you can almost guarantee that you would be wasting your time, money and effort on such a program. If you take a look at the Tony Ferguson Weightloss Program forum, you will see that a ridiculous amount of people cannot stick to this program for days - let alone weeks or months. Even if you somehow force yourself to stick to the program through sheer willpower - eventually it will most likely come back to bite you in the behind.
I believe that programs like these are a quick-fix. Rather than trying to find a quick (and temporary) solution, try to find something that you can enjoy for the rest of your life - a lifestyle change. Apart from yielding far better long-term results, a "lifestyle change" will help you feel so much better physically. Plus you wouldn't have wasted your time, effort and money on products like these.
I have just published a very popular article entitled "Fad Diet, Fad Result". I highly recommend that you give it a read, as it will provide you with further insight as to why these fad diets do not work for the vast majority of participants.
